• 3.0 out of 5 stars from susan weckbaugh -- Where was the editor? : M. Hugo's book is over 770 pp. While this is not necessarily off-putting, someone should have advised him to cut the chapters of French history, palace intrigue and political views. His description of the Storm, the child's battle to survive and the foundering ship at sea were absolutely incredible, although one needs a lot of patience to plow through. I found myself skimming the pages I found irrelevant and have put the book down for a little, promising to return to it. His descriptions of characters are quite in depth but one still comes away feeling they're not quite real. It needs remembering that M. Hugo was in exile from his home in France on the stormy, wind-swept isle of isolated Guernsey which I am sure colored his view of life rather darkly. Still, it is a book written by Victor Hugo and for that reason alone, worth reading. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2019 )

No publisher's notes or credits, no editing, just straight into the text. That isn't necessarily a bad thing but the text font it tiny. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from George Joseph -- Another Masterpiece : Victor Hugo is one of my favorite authors. His characters are always more complex than they appear to be on the surface. Gwynplaine, Dea, Ursus, and Homo represent different aspects of ourselves as well as society. The juxtaposition of these characters, and their interactions give the reader a lot to think about. The highly developed intellect of "Ursus" (Bear) in the appearance of a madman, "Homo" (Human) the wolf who is tame, Dea who is beauty itself, but blind to physical beauty, Gwynplaine who has a beautiful heart yet outwardly hideous; these "contradictions" create another layer of interest to this story. The hard back was completely plain without picture or lettering, indicating that it should have had a dust jacket.
